Rosgen Stream Classification System

The Rosgen Stream Classification System identifies seven major stream types labeled A through G. Using stream bed particle size distribution each category is further refined into six sub-classes from 1 (bedrock) to 6 (silt/clay).

The Rosgen system exploits the fact that streams tend to organize themselves around the most likely combination of variables based on physical and chemical laws. This tendency to seek a dynamic equilibrium reflecting landscape conditions in a watershed lends itself nicely to classification.
