Pine, Scotch
Pinus sylvestris var. gevaudan

Seedling Height: 8 to 12 inches.

Mature Size: 40 to 50 feet in height and 2 to 3 feet in diameter.

Type: Evergreen.

Growth Rate: Medium.

Form: A medium sized tree, often with a twisted or poorly formed trunk. Young crowns are rounded; older crowns become round-topped.

Soil Type: Clay, loam, sand, well drained.

Light: Full sun.

Foliage: Evergreen needles, 1.5 to 3 inches long, with two stout, twisted needles per fascicle, blue-green color.

Blooms: Early to mid spring.

Flowers: Males cylindrical, yellow, in large clusters along twigs; females oval, yellow-green to purple.

Fruit: Cones are ovoid, 1.5" to 2.5 inches long, yellow-brown in color and slightly stalked; maturing in the fall.

Values and Uses: A great tree for many uses. Scotch pine is planted for wind or privacy breaks and for Christmas trees. A very durable and tough tree that is also recommended for planting on reclamation sites.

Did You Know? The gevudan strain is from France.
