Form: Small- to medium-sized tree that forms a dense pyramidal crown that rounds with age.

Foliage: Alternate, simple, lanceolate in shape, 3 to 7 inches long and very sharply serrate margin bearing bristle-tipped teeth
Blooms: Mid spring
Flowers: Male catkins are golden and pendant, appearing in the spring; female catkins are borne on spikes, appearing with the leaves.
Fruit: Acorns are oval in shape, 1/2 to 1 inch long. Cap covers 1/2 of nut with scales very prominently reflexed – resembles hair.
Values and Uses: The primary use of the Sawtooth is for wildlife food and cover. Deer, turkey, squirrel and bear love the acorns. Acorns drop in the early fall in abundance. Trees will start producing acorns after approximately 12 years. Sawtooth can also be planted for a shade tree.
