Flowers: Staminate yellow-green flowers borne on elongated clusters of catkins; pistilate flowers are very small, green and borne on a short stalk, appear with the leaves; blooms in spring
Fruit: Acorns are 1/2"-inch long, orange-brown, scaly cap covers about 1/3 of the nut; matures in fall after two years.
Values and Uses: The wood is very hard and strong. Lumber from the Cherrybark is used furniture, flooring and interior carpentry work. A great wildlife tree; the acorns are desired by squirrels, deer, turkeys, some songbirds and wood ducks.
