Mature Size: 20 to 25 feet in height and 1 to 2 feet in diameter

Type: Deciduous

Form: Very dense shrub or small tree

Soil Type: Clay, loam, sand, occasionally wet, well drained

Light: Full sun

Foliage: Simple lobed leaves emerge reddish then turn dark green, 1 to 3 inches long, serrated leaf margins. Thorns develop behind leaves.

Blooms: Early to mid spring

Flowers: White flower that is ½ inch in diameter. Flowers last 7 to 10 days.

Fruit: A red pome that is ¼ inches in diameter, mature in early fall, persist through the winter. Fruit desired by songbirds.

Values and Uses: A great landscaping tree that is primarily used as a screen boarder or a hedge row when pruned. A great tree to plant outside a house or office window to help deter criminals from breaking in due to the long needles it produces. Also used for firewood.
