Form: Poor with a twisted trunk and low branches, numerous sucker shoots on trunk and in crown

Soil Type: Sandy, loamy, fertile, moist but well drained

Light: Full sun, partial sun

Foliage: Simple elliptical to ovate, 1½ to 3 inches, green above with pale white bottom

Blooms: Early to mid spring

Flowers: White to pink

Fruit: Reddish-green pome, appear in early fall

Values and Uses: Used as an ornamental tree for the beautiful showy red to white flowers. Apples, small to medium size, will appear in the early fall. The apples are desired by deer, bear and other wildlife. Apple production starts in 8 to 12 years.

Did You Know? Members of this genus have hydrogen cyanide in the seed and leaves.
