2011 Hunter Protocol for Conway Robinson State Forest Hunt
Hunting Dates and Lottery
- Hunting will take place on three days only:
- Monday, November 21st
- Monday, December 5th
- Saturday, December 10th.
- Hunters will be selected using a lottery system (application deadline is 12:01am, October 17).
- Selected hunters and alternates will be notified by mail and email on October 18th.
- 17 hunters and 20 alternates will be selected. The selected hunters can participate for all three hunting days. Selected hunter spots are non-transferable. Alternate hunters are invited to attend each day and will be given the opportunity to hunt as space becomes available.
Participant Requirements
All hunters selected by the lottery must fulfill the following requirements in order to participate:
- All hunters must qualify their guns and certify themselves by November 5, 2011. All participants must qualify in order to hunt.
- Certify on an approved range (listed below) and limit gun use to shotguns only. 20 gauge or larger and #1 or larger buckshot (20 gauge may use #2 buckshot, or #3 buckshot).
- Certification consists of: firing from an off-hand position, one shot at a 14” square target at 25 yards, with a passing score of at least 3 pellets for 000, 4 for 00 or 0, 5 for #1, 6 for #2 and 7 for #3. Each hunter will be allowed 2 attempts per weapon.
- Weapons and ammo may be added to the certification card any time before the 2011 hunt days.
- Only weapons and ammunition qualified with and listed on the certification card may be used or possessed during the hunt.
- Hunters who fail to certify on an approved range will be disqualified from participating.
- Participants are required to attend a pre-hunt orientation and safety meeting on November 12, at Nokesville Fire Department, 12826 Marsteller Drive, Nokesville, Virginia 20181 from 10 am to 11:30 am. Attendance is mandatory. Failure to attend forfeits your eligibility to participate
Prior To Hunt
- All participants must possess all valid licenses and permits as regulated by Virginia State Law.
- All participants must possess a valid State Forest Use Permit.
- No dogs permitted.
- All hunting must be conducted using a portable tree stand provided by the hunter.
- Stands must be self climbing, or free standing ladder type. Tree stands must be a minimum of 10-15 feet high in trees. No intrusions are to be made into selected climbing trees (i.e. No screw-in tree steps, or permanent stands are to be constructed)
- Stands are to be removed at the end of each day.
- Safety harness must be used at all times.
- Firearms must be unloaded while entering, exiting or climbing with stand.
- Stands must be located within 50 yards of stake (see map).
- Cutting or removal of vegetation in the State Forest is prohibited.
- Scouting of the area is allowed during normal operating hours. No weapons are to be carried during scouting.
- Firearms are only permitted on the Forest on the designated days of the hunt.
Day of the Hunt
- Participants are required to wear blaze orange on the day of the hunt as required in State Law.
- Participants are required to possess all required licenses and permits on their person when they arrive to check-in.
- All participants are required to check in and out at the designated area on the days of the hunt. Selected hunters that are not present by 15 minutes after check in time will be considered as an “alternate” and will be allowed entrance as space becomes available.
- November 21st - Check-in time: 5:15 am.
- December 5th - Check-in time: 5:30 am.
- December 10th - Check-in time: 5:30 am.
- Check-out time: 2:00 pm. each afternoon.
Legal Species
- White-tailed deer is the only legal species to be hunted. There are no limits on the number of antlerless deer that can be taken on the day of the hunt. Any antlered deer taken must have a minimum of 5 points on one side. If a hunter takes a buck not meeting the above criteria, that individual’s hunting privilege will be revoked for the remainder of the season, the antlers will be confiscated and the individual will be disqualified from future deer management programs for a minimum of two years.
- If a hunter needs to track wounded deer outside of his compartment boundary or dispatch wounded deer from the ground, he must contact a hunt manager for permission or be accompanied by a manager.
Field Dressing
- Deer are to be field dressed by the hunter prior to being taken to the check station. Further processing is not permitted before delivering the deer to the check station. Entrails are to be buried or covered by forest litter. Field dressing is not permitted within 35 yards of any trail or road.
Restricted Areas
- Hunting is not permitted within 100 yards of any property boundary.
- Discharge of weapons is not permitted in the following areas:
- along roads,
- along gas line right-of-way,
- across roads or gas line right-of-way
- within 100 yards of parking area and pavilion.
- Weapons must be unloaded and cased or broken down except when in designated hunting area.
