Riparian Buffer Zones: Common Plants
There are many trees, shrubs, grasses, vines and other plants that thrive in riparian buffers. While they represent many diverse species, they all tend to have very well developed root systems and a tolerance (or in some cases, a preference) for damp to very wet soil. Some of the plants commonly found in riparian buffers are:
- River Birch
- Green Ash
- Red Maple
- Black Gum
- Sycamore
- Sweet Gum
- Water Oak
- Pin Oak
- Smooth Alder
- Buttonbush
- Grey stem Dogwood
- Spice Bush
- Redosien Dogwood
- many Willow species
These plants have proved useful in restoration and Reforestation Projects.
