2001 Virginia Forest Inventory and Analysis Facts
- The Virginia Forest Inventory and Analysis system uses an array of 4,691 permanent sample plots distributed across the state.
- The first Forest Survey was conducted in 1940. The first permanent sample plots were established in the 1957; many of the original plots are still in use. Each plot is discreetly marked with a galvanized wire pin referenced to witness trees.
- Each plot is statistically representative of approximately 5,400 acres of Virginia 's 25.3 million total acres.
- A plot is actually a cluster of 4 circular sub-plots, each measuring 1/24 of an acre in size. The radius of each plot is 24 feet.
- Inventory specialists record each tree on the plot by species, diameter, height, quality, and condition. Also recorded is detailed information on forest type, ownership, site productivity, slope, aspect, past treatments and disturbances as well as invasive plant species on the site.
- Twenty percent of the plots are visited and measured each year. Each year's quota, called a "panel", includes plots representative of all areas of the state.
- The Virginia Forest Inventory and Analysis is a joint project of the USDA- Forest Service and the Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF). VDOF personnel gather the field data; statistical analysis is done by US Forest Service specialists.
- The Virginia Department of Forestry employs 13 full-time inventory specialists: 6 crews of 2 persons each, and one state inventory coordinator.
