Montgomery County contains 252,730 acres and lies in the Ridge and Valley province. It was formed from Fincastle County in 1776, and named for a Revolutionary hero, General Richard Montgomery. The region was settled by pioneers from Pennsylvania of German, French, Scotch-Irish and English decent who arrived using the “Wilderness Road” which roughly corresponds to current Rt. 11.
Approximately 60% of the county is forested with about 7% located in the Jefferson National Forest. The soils in the county vary from poor to good in the productivity and ability to grow trees. Precipitation averages about 40 inches.
Several rare and endangered species are present including the tall gay-feather and Addison’s leatherflower, both found on the Pedler Hills Glades Natural Area and piratebush which is found on Poor Mountain.
