Health Care for Urban Trees Is Focus of Workshop
A day-long workshop focusing on plant health care for urban trees will be held in Waynesboro, Va., Friday, Sept. 7.
The workshop will feature two tracks: one for anyone who works with or is interested in tree establishment and ensuring the health of trees in urban and community settings, and the other for arborists and those interested in learning more about advanced rigging and working safely with cranes.
“This is the 12th annual edition of the Waynesboro workshop,” said Paul Revell, urban and community forestry manager with the Virginia Department of Forestry. “And this year’s lineup of speakers is one of the best, with several being nationally renowned.”
The track for arborists begins at 7:45 a.m. with registration and runs until 3:30 p.m. The session, which will be held at Ridgeview Park in Waynesboro, will be led by Rip Tompkins, safety trainer with ArborMaster Training Inc. He will discuss new standards for crane safety and demonstrate advanced rigging techniques. Lunch is included with the registration fee.
The other track also begins with registration at 7:45 a.m. but will begin at the new Best Western Conference Center, 109 Apple Tree Lane, then move to Ridgeview Park for lunch and the afternoon portion of the workshop. The sessions in this track include presentations by Dr. Bruce Fraedrich, vice president of research with F.A. Bartlett; Dr. John Ball, professor of horticulture and forestry at South Dakota State University; Mr. Jim Flott, community forestry consultant in Spokane, Wash.; Jan Ferrigan with the Arlington County (Va.) Cooperative Extension, and John Wright, a forester with the Virginia Department of Forestry.
Dr. Fraedrich has two presentations – “Elms, Crabs & Other Stress-Tolerant Trees,” and “Abiotic Disorders of Landscape Trees.” Dr. Ball also has two presentations – “After-Care should not be an After-Thought” and “Hey, Mom, the Tree Guy is Here.” Mr. Flott’s presentation is called, “Don’t Plant a Tree – Plant the Roots.” Mr. Ferrigan and Mr. Wright will co-present a session on “Urban & Rural Invasive Species.”
Advance registration closes August 31. For more information or to register, contact Dwayne Jones at 540.942.6735, or Becky Woodson at 434.977.1375, Ext. 3324.
