Tree Seedlings Available for Landscaping and Reforestation

More than 45 species of tree seedlings are available to Virginia landowners for use in landscaping and/or reforestation efforts through the Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF).

Weather permitting, the Agency will begin harvesting, packaging and shipping tree seedlings in early January for the 2006 season. The harvesting/planting season runs for 14 weeks (January through mid-April) each year.

During the last 14-week season (January 2005 through April 2005), the VDOF harvested and shipped more than 33 Million seedlings - an average of 392,000 per day. Agency employees assisted with the planting of more than 25 Million seedlings during that same time period.

"We've been producing quality tree seedlings for Virginians for 89 years now," said State Forester Carl Garrison. "Our two nurseries grow some of the best seedlings available anywhere."

For Virginians wishing to enhance the beauty of their landscapes, a minimum of 25 seedlings may be ordered. VDOF sells specialty packs that are designed to provide a spectacular fall color display; enhance wildlife; prevent erosion; improve water quality, or serve as a screen or windbreak.

Orders may be placed online (www.dof.virginia.gov); through the mail, or over the phone (540.363.7000). The 2006 tree seedling catalog is available in printed form and online.

Those seeking to reforest their land may order thousands of seedlings at a time. Please contact your local office of the Virginia Department of Forestry for assistance with placing these large orders.
