Conserving Forest Land and Forest Resources

Virginia's forests contribute $30.5 billion annually to the commonwealth's economy while enhancing the health and well being of its citizens. The forest resource supports one of the largest industries in the State by providing raw materials for numerous forest products. The Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) is required to manage forested state lands to conserve and improve the resource and produce income for the commonwealth. • Conservation Easements - A conservation easement excludes certain activities on private land, such as commercial development or residential subdivisions. Its main goal is to conserve natural or man-made resources on the land. The easement is usually described in terms of the resource it is designed to protect, such as agricultural, forest, historic, or open space easements.
