The Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) offers Cost Share Programs for landowners. These programs promote land conservation, wildlife habitats and insect management.

Riparian Buffer Tax Credit

Wooded buffer zones along streams, rivers, and the Chesapeake Bay can be classified as riparian forests. You can receive a tax credit for preserving this type of land.

Money For Mitigation

Communities in the wildland/urban interface (WUI) can take positive measures to reduce, or mitigate, potential threats from wildfire. Firewise Virginia offers new opportunities to help these communities and their landowners.

Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) Grants

VFA Grant requirements are unchanged this year, including the late application penalty. All documents below are in English, PDF format.

Please fill in all blanks on Form 623 with the best information you have. Forms not completely filled out will not be scored and will not be eligible for a grant.

Dry Hydrant Grants

This year, past applications have priority from the last two application cycles. Therefore, new applications will not have priority over these applications.

  • Application period: February 15 - March 31, 2009
  • Deadline: March 31, 2009
  • Dry Hydrant Grant Application (English; Word format l PDF format). You'll also need to complete and submit a Form W9.

NOTE: Complete information IS REQUIRED on applications for either program. If the application is incomplete, it will be discarded.

About Dry Hydrants

Virginia’s dry hydrant grant program provides for the installation of dry hydrants to improve the rural water supply for fire suppression operations.
Applications are taken on an annual basis each year.

Urban and Community Forestry Grants

  • The 2009 Urban and Community Forestry Assistance grant application deadline was May 8, 2009.
  • National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council (NUCFAC)
    NUCFAC offers grants to support urban and community activities that are national or widespread in their impact or application. www.treelink.org/nucfac

Water Quality

Water Quality Improvement Fund (WQIF) Regional Grants Program

The Virginia Department of Forestry will accept project proposals from private citizens, local units of government, approved non-profit organizations, civic groups, educational institutions, or community volunteer groups which meet the specific program objectives. Eligible project categories are described in detail in the attached flyer along with the proposal format.

Grants will be awarded as they are received, evaluated for compliance with the program and approved.  Funds will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. Proposals are currently being accepted for fall 2008 and spring 2009 project funding.

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Transportation Enhancement Grants:

Begins in April each year - deadline is November 1. Funding for:

  • acquisition of scenic easements and scenic or historic sites
  • scenic or historic highway programs
  • landscaping and other scenic beautification
  • historic preservation
  • control and removal of outdoor advertising
  • archaeological planning and research
  • environmental mitigation
