Southwestern Virginia Interagency Fire Prevention Education Team

Fire Prevention Education Team Mobilized

Arson ad. Hunter Safety ad.

To increase awareness of fall forest fire season and the dangers of wildfires, the Virginia Department of Forestry, along with the George Washington and Jefferson National Forest’s has mobilized a fire prevention education team to educate citizens in high fire-prone areas of SW Virginia.

One topic the team is focusing on is wildland arson. They have produced a poster titled STOP ARSON that will be posted in high visibility areas in each county. The team will work with local media to produce public service announcements (PSAs) and articles to be published in local newspapers. Some team members will go door to door to hand out educational material and to ask for citizen's cooperation with preventing wildfires and reporting arson activities. The team will participate in local events such as festivals and parades and will set up displays in local businesses.

The team will focus on the additional concerns of debris burning and develop a campaign to raise the awareness of hunters who will soon be in the forests throughout Virginia.
