Dear Volunteer Fire Department:
The Virginia Department of Forestry has been notified that we will receive Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) grant money this year. You may apply for any amount and any Fire Related items you need, but no single item should cost more than $5,000.00. Remember there are limited funds. All grants are a 50-50 cash match grant.
We will be placing a high priority rating on those grants that are purchasing Wildland Personal Protective Equipment, Wildland Fire Fighting Tools, Communication Equipment, and/or Training Related Items this year. This does not mean that if you do not buy these items, you will not get a grant. However, the safety of Virginia’s Wildland Firefighters is a major priority for the Department of Forestry.
Enclosed are the VFA grant application - Form 623 (English; PDF format), Form AD-1048 (English; PDF format), and Standard Form 424B (English; PDF format). Please fill in all blanks on Form 623 with the best information you have. Forms not completely filled out will not be scored and will not be eligible for a grant.
The following will help you complete Form 623:
- Population includes only your first-due area of response.
- Wildland urban interface communities are defined as those with 10 or more homes in a woodland setting.
- Number of dispatches are the totals for all of 2007 only.
- County, city, or public funds are monies allotted to Departments from local governments and generated mostly by taxation.
- Donations are money received from individuals (contributions) not from county tax money.
Your grant application along with the federal forms must be received by this office no later than April 30, 2008. We will notify you promptly if your Fire Department will receive a grant.
We will be managing the grant from the Central Office in Charlottesville. Please contact the Resource Protection Division at 434.977.6555 for any questions or for details regarding your grant.
Sincerely,
Phil Carpenter
