The Virginia Department of Forestry invites you to participate in the 2008 Virginia Wildland Fire Training Academy. This training is offered to all interested Fire Department and other Wildland Firefighters for the purpose of developing skills and abilities needed in combating wildfires in the Wildland Urban Interface.
The training will be conducted at Longwood University with meals and lodging provided. The Virginia Department of Forestry, through a Fire Preparedness grant received from the National Fire Plan, will pay for the lodging and meal expenses for Fire Department personnel and Virginia Fire Crew members.
Registration for the training will be accepted through April 1st. Detailed course information will be mailed to attendees.

Course Descriptions
I-200 Basic Incident Command System
1 ½ days
This course introduces students to the principles of the Incident Command System
associated with incident-related performance. Topics include: leadership and
management, delegation of authority and management by objectives, functional
areas and positions, briefings, organizational flexibility, transitions and
transfers.
Pre-requisites: None
I-300 Intermediate Incident Command System
3 ½ days
This course provides a greater description and detail of the Incident Command
System (ICS) organization and operations, including application of essential
principles and descriptions of air operations. Modules in the course include
Organization and Staffing, Organizing for Incidents and Events, Incident Resources
Management, Air Operations and Incident and Event Planning. Instruction on
preparing an Incident Action Plan is part of the training course.

PMS 419 Engine Operations ** FULL **
4 Days
Engine Operator addresses the standards, procedures and techniques to be an
engine operator on a wildland fire. The course was developed to standardize
what has in the past been known as “Engine Academies”.

S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior
L-180 Human Factors on the Fire line
I-100 ICS Orientation
2 Days
This course trains firefighters in basic wildland firefighting skills. Safety,
tactics, equipment use and operation prepares the firefighter for fire suppression
work. Training in fire behavior factors will aid in the safe and effective
control of wildland fires. Basic knowledge of the structure and concept of
the ICS system will be covered along with human factors on the fire line. This
course will be presented in a distance learning environment as approximately
24 hours of training will be completed prior to the academy. The remaining
field portion of the training will be completed at the academy along with the
final examination.

S-131 Advanced Firefighter Training (2004 Version) ** FULL **
1 Day
This course meets the training needs of both Advanced Firefighter/Squad Boss
(FF1) and Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5). The course is designed to be interactive
in nature. It contains several tactical decision games designed to facilitate
learning the objectives and class discussion. Topics include: fireline reference
materials, communications, and tactical decision making.

S-133 Look up, Look Down, Look Around ** FULL **
½ Day
This course examines the wildland fire environment and the indicators firefighters
should observe on the fire line in order to anticipate fire behavior.
Pre-requisites: Firefighter 1 or S190.
S-200 Initial Attack Incident Commander
2 Days
Designed to provide the initial attack Incident Commander with training in
Readiness and Mobilization, Size-up, planning and ordering, deployment and
containment, administrative duties and post fire evaluation.

S-212 Wildfire Power Saws (2004 Version) ** FULL **
3 1/2 Days
Provides students’ skill training for work as a power saw operator on
wildland fires. This course covers the duties and responsibilities of the power
saw operator, parts and maintenance of the power saw, application and safety.

S-215 Fire Operations in the Urban Interface (2003
course) ** FULL **
4 Days
The course is required training for initial attack incident commanders and
strike team leaders. This course is designed to assist structure and wildland
firefighters to make tactical decisions when confronting wildland fire that
threatens life, property, and improvements in the wildland/urban interface.
Instructional units include: interface awareness, size up, initial strategy
and incident action plan, structure triage, structure protection tactics, incident
action plan assessment and update, follow-up and public relations, and firefighter
safety in the interface.
Pre-requisites: Firefighter 1 or S130/S190
S-230 Single Resource Boss (2004 Version)
3 Days
This is a classroom course designed to produce student proficiency in the performance
of duties associated with the single resource boss position from initial dispatch
through demobilization to the home unit. Topics include: operational leadership,
preparation and mobilization, assignment preparation, risk management, entrapment
avoidance, safety and tactics, offline duties, demobilization, and post incident
responsibilities.
Pre-requisites: Qualified as a FFT1, S290.
S-231 Engine Boss (2004 version)
1 ½ Days
This is a skill course designed to produce student proficiency in the performance
of duties associated with engine boss. Topics include: engine and crew capabilities
and limitations, information sources, fire size-up considerations, tactics,
and WUI.
Pre-requisites: S-230 and qualified as a FFT1.
S-244 Field Observer ** FULL **
2 ½ Days
This course provides the student with the skills necessary to perform as a
field observer (FOBS) and/or a fire effects monitor (FEMO). Topics include:
roles and responsibilities of the FOBS and FEMO; how to make observations and
document those observations; how to produce hand drawn and GPS field maps;
and how to navigate using a compass and GPS. The navigation unit has 4 ½ hours
of field exercises and the final exercise is 8 hours. For pre-course work students
need to read and complete exercises in Basic Land Navigation.
Pre-requisites: S-290, Basic understanding of how
to use a GPS receiver, FOBS: Qualified as any single resource boss, FEMO: Qualified
as FFT2 or Firefighter 1.
S-260 Interagency Incident Business Management ** FULL **
2 Days
This course meets the general training needs of all positions for which an
understanding of interagency incident business management is required. The
student will locate and apply the appropriate regulations, established interagency
procedures and necessary forms for each of the following incident management
areas: Application of conduct and ethics in incident support; Recruitment,
classification, pay provisions and timekeeping/recording, commissary, injury
compensation, and travel; Acquisition; Managing and tracking government property;
Interagency coordination and cooperation; Investigation and reporting of accidents;
Investigating, documenting, and reporting claims; Containing incident costs;
and All risk.

S-261 Applied Interagency Incident Business Management
2 Days
This course is designed for entry-level finance positions. It is designed to
be taken after completion of Interagency Incident Business Management. The
student will be able to describe the roles and responsibilities, demonstrate
proficiency in the skills/knowledge required to perform the tasks of the following
positions: Commissary Manager, Personnel Time Recorder, Equipment Time Recorder,
Compensation for Injury Specialist and Claims Specialist.

S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior
4 Days
This course is designed to instruct prospective fireline supervisors in wildland
fire behavior for effective and safe fire management operations. The course
provides a detailed treatment of fuels, weather, topography and their effects
on fire behavior.
Pre-requisites: Firefighter 1 or S190
S-300 Extended Attack Incident Commander
2 Days
This course is designed to meet the training needs of the incident commander
type 3. It is presented in a lecture/discussion format and supplemented with
group exercises. The six instructional units cover: Information gathering;
Planning; Supporting Organization; Operations; Transitioning; and Demobilization/Administrative
Requirement.
Pre-requisites: Qualified as ICT4 and TFLD or qualified
as ICT4, STLD and any two single resource boss positions.
S-390 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior Calculations ** FULL **
4 Days
This course is designed to introduce fire behavior calculations by manual methods,
using nomograms and the Fire Behavior Handbook Appendix B. The student gains
an understanding of the determinants of fire behavior through studying inputs
(weather, slope, fuels and fuel moisture). The student also learns how to interpret
fire behavior outputs, documentation processes, and fire behavior briefing
components.
Pre-requisites: S-290 and qualified as a single resource
boss.
Tractor Plow Operation ** FULL **
3 Days
This course instructs the student in the safe and effective operation of tractor
plow units. On the ground instruction is utilized along with some indoor instruction
on tactics and safety. This course is designed for operators who have some
level of experience operating a tractor plow on fire assignments.
Pre-requisites: Students are required to have had some prior VDOF
training on tractor plow operation and obtain pre-approval from local VDOF personnel.
Name of VDOF personnel providing approval needs to be indicated on online registration form.
