Historical Forest Fires In Virginia
Here are images and text from some of the forest fires that have occurred throught the state. The Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) is responsible for suppressing wildfires on public land.

Size: 1,000 acres. Cause: Sparks from a chimney fire.
Helicopter
working to the west of the 3 acre breakover. A 5 acre breakover from the
night before can be seen just above the date stamp. The upper right corner
of the photo shows the aftermath of the fire.
Smoke
from the 3 acre breakover. The fire has consumed most of the vegetation in
the upper right corner of the photo.
Nottoway/Lunenburg Fire
Fire burned 949 acres
October 25-27, 2001.

The fires size as of 2/28/02 1800hrs was estimated to be 1,748 acres. The final estimated size at containment will be 3,843 acres.
