Goals and Purpose

Planting trees is a common key strategy for achieving water quality, air quality, as well as other resource goals. The Chesapeake Forest Fund is a project of the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay that provides full funding to implement open land tree plantings on rural private properties in the Chesapeake counties of Virginia in fall 2014 and spring 2015. It will also provide costs for maintenance of plantings. Funds for the program are through a private entity that is striving to reduce greenhouse gasses and provide other natural resource benefits.

Program Guidelines

  • Private landowners in counties in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed (see map in Fact Sheet)
  • Open land only – areas without trees for the past 10 years
  • Priority on lands with conservation easement, areas adjacent to existing forest, and proximity to streams. However, all interested landowners may apply.
  • The Alliance has a preference for plantings of:
    • Native trees
    • Mixtures of pine and hardwood
    • Native hardwoods, shortleaf pine
    • Trees that effectively capture and store greenhouse gasses
    • Pine only plantings will also be considered
  • Minimum project size of one acre
  • Landowner agrees to maintain the project for 15 years, if destroyed agrees to repay 100% the costs
  • Program will cover all establishment costs and maintenance costs for up to five years.
  • No fertilization during the 15 year agreement
  • No harvesting during the 15 year agreement
  • Trees are property of the landowner
  • Additional incentives may be available for agreements greater than 15 years
