Member Biographies

Occupation/Business: State Forester, Virginia Dept. of Forestry

Education: B. S. Forestry and Wildlife Management, Virginia Tech.
Experience: Started with the VDOF in 1980 after graduating from Virginia Tech. During the next fifteen years he served as a county forester and became the District Forester for southeast Virginia. In 1995, Garrison created a private forestry, wildlife, and natural resource management consulting firm. In 2002, he returned to Virginia to become the Regional Forester in Charlottesville, a position responsible for 22 counties. Appointed State Forester in November, 2004. Member of the Society of American Foresters (SAF), and served as Chairperson for the Virginia Division of SAF. He also previously served as a member of the Regional Open-Space Preservation Advisory Board.

Interests/Hobbies: Outdoors, waterfowl hunting.

Experience: Certified Forester. Entire career has been in forestry, specifically the forest industry in Central and Southside Virginia. Active Member, Society of American Foresters (Virginia Chairman 2001, Virginia Secretary/Treasurer 1997-1999). Awarded Appalachian SAF Distinguished Service to Forestry Award (2004); Active Member, Virginia Forestry Association (VFA) (Board of Directors, Past Chair of the Project Learning Tree Committee, and Membership Task Force); College of Natural Resources Alumni Board at Virginia Tech (Vice President 2003, President 2004); Recognized as the Virginia Tech College of Natural Resources Outstanding Young Alumni in 2001.

Experience: After receiving her Masters, she worked as professional staff for the House of Representatives Interior Committee. In 1992, she became the National Policy Director for a western regional conservation organization working on national forest policy, the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act. She worked between 2001 and 2005 with The Wilderness Society on their Potomac Watershed project. In Alexandria, Judy serves as the Chair of the Park and Recreation Commission, the Open Space Steering Committee and the Four Mile Run Redesign Task Force. Judy is a licensed architect and a LEED Accredited Professional under the US Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Program.

Interests/Hobbies: Backpacking, skiing, fishing.






Judy Guse-Noritake, AIA, LEED AP

Experiences: Lee has worked in the pulp and paper industry for 38 years; served on the Board of Trustees of the Nature Conservancy of Virginia and the University of Virginia Engineering Foundation.

Interests/Hobbies: Tennis, volunteering, reading, walking, gardening, geneaology.








             Lee Showalter

Occupation/Business: Shelton H. Short Jr. Emeritus Professor of Forestry, Virginia Tech.

Education: B.S., M.S, and PhD. In Forest Management, Silviculture and Forest Biology, respectively, from Iowa State University.

Experience: Forty years of experience in forestry education, research, and technology transfer with an emphasis on the silviculture, and soil-site-plant relationships of eastern U.S. forests. Developed and taught courses and educational programs in urban forestry, and programs for continuing professional forestry education. Author or coauthor of more than 70 research papers and proceedings related to forest management. Past-President and Fellow in the Society of American Foresters. Certified Forester®.

Interests/Hobbies: Children and grandchildren, outdoor activities, volunteering for church and natural resource activities, surf fishing, and auctions.
