Conservation: Conserving The Forest Landbase
Private ownerships accounts for 66% of Virginia's forestland. Currently, Virginia loses around 67,000 acres per year converted to non-forest uses.
Conservation of the forestland base in Virginia is critical for several important reasons. Virginia's forestland contributes to the environmental well being of its citizens and offers critical habitat for plants and animals. Also, Virginia's economy depends on forest resources for income and employment. Furthermore, Virginia's forests add to a diversity of recreational resources for its citizens.
You can see Virginia's Conservation Lands Maps online.
Governor Tim Kaine announced an initiative to protect an additional 400,000 acres of land by the year 2010. You can track the progress toward this goal.
